At Aruma, ‘The Safe Way’ is about building a safety first culture where everyone takes responsibility for protecting their own and each other’s health, safety and wellbeing – this includes the people we support.

It looks different for everyone, but for our participants it might look like this:

  1. Physical safety – accessible spaces, safe use of equipment and proper support for daily tasks.
  2. Emotional and psychological wellbeing – feeling respected, heard and included.
  3. Choice, control, and independence – support that encourages independence and decision making.
  4. Social connection and inclusion – participation in community, work or education, a sense of belonging, respect and inclusion for cultural and personal identity.
  5. Rights, dignity, and safeguarding – access to advocacy, the elimination of restrictive or harmful practices and the understanding of personal rights.
  6. Health and wellbeing – access to healthcare, preventative care, and good quality nutrition, exercise and sleep.

We had a chat to Aruma participant Josephine and Aruma Shared Living Manager Daniella, and asked: “What does ‘The Safe Way’ mean to you?”
