At a Press Club address on 22 April, Minister Mark Butler announced a number of proposed changes to the NDIS. You can read the speech here.
Aruma CEO, Martin Laverty was involved in setting the NDIS up in 2011 and believes these changes are important for making the NDIS sustainable and returning it to its original purpose – supporting people with the most significant disabilities.
Three key areas likely to benefit Aruma and NDIS participants are:
- Vetting of SIL providers: Stronger checks to improve safety and give people more confidence when choosing a home.
- Mandatory registration: Required for higher risk supports, improving service quality and safety.
- Pricing changes: A more sustainable pricing model to better support not-for-profit providers like Aruma delivering complex services.
What does this mean right now?
Nothing changes immediately. The legislation still needs to pass Parliament, and any changes are not expected until 2028.
