Do you or someone you care for receive Supported Independent Living, known as SIL? If so, there are some important changes coming that are worth knowing about.
SIL is the support that helps people with disability live at home. It can include help with everyday things like showering, dressing, cooking and cleaning. To learn more about SIL at Aruma, check out our page here.
From 1 July 2026, the rules about SIL are changing. Here is what you need to know.
What is changing for SIL?
A provider is an organisation that delivers your support.
Right now, some SIL providers are registered with the NDIS Commission and some are not. The NDIS Commission is the body that checks providers are doing a good job.
From 1 July 2026, all SIL providers must be registered with the NDIS Commission. This starts a transition period, which means providers will have some time to become registered. The NDIS Commission will share more detail about these timeframes through 2026.
You can learn more about this update via the NDIS commission website.
Why is this changing?
The government wants SIL to be safe and good for everyone.
The new rules will:
- Keep people safe at home
- Check that providers are doing a good job
- Make the rules the same for all providers
What does this mean for participants?
If your provider is already registered with the NDIS Commission, nothing changes for you. Your support stays the same.
Some providers are not registered. A few of these may stop delivering support if they cannot follow the strict rules.
If your provider is not registered, you might feel worried about this, and that is okay. The good news is you have time to plan, and your support coordinator can help you.
What about Aruma?
Aruma is a registered provider with the NDIS Commission. This means we already follow the strict rules. If you receive your support with Aruma, nothing changes and your support stays the same.
Things you can do
If you have SIL and are not sure whether these changes affect you, the first thing to know is that you do not have to work it out on your own.
The simplest way to find out is to check whether your provider is registered, and your support coordinator can help you with this.
Here are some simple steps you can take.
- Ask your provider if they are registered, you can also check on the NDIS Provider Register
- Ask when they will be registered, if they are not yet
- Talk to your support coordinator
- Read your service agreement to understand your notice period, in case you ever decide to change providers
- Look at other providers if you need to
- Reach out to Aruma if you would like help. Talk to our friendly team on 1300 538 746 or request a call back.
