Wendy has done it again, taking out the People’s Choice Award at the University of Sydney’s Lived-Experience Art Competition for artists with disability.
Her abstract piece, Creative Magic, captured hearts and votes among a talented group of finalists at this year’s competition, themed Change and Hope. The theme invited artists nationwide to explore visions of the future, as they reflect on their lived experiences of disability.
This is Wendy’s second People’s Choice win, after she won the award in 2023. For Wendy, art is more than a creative outlet. It is a way to connect with the world and express emotions that words alone cannot.
Inspired by the people and nature around her, Wendy’s abstract style allows her to share how she feels in her own way.
Because I don’t use as many words, I express myself through my art
, says Wendy.
“When I paint, I paint with colours and shapes of nature. I sit outside, I feel the air, I see what hits the ground around me, and I paint what I feel.”
Wendy, who lives in one of Aruma’s Supported Independent Living homes in Sydney, celebrated this achievement with her family and support team, who continue to encourage her creativity and independence every step of the way.
“Wendy’s talent and spirit shine brightly, and we could not be prouder,” says Muhammad Haseeb, Manager of Shared Living.
A special thank you goes to Wendy’s Support Worker, Nick Nicola, whose encouragement has helped her reconnect with painting and explore new ways to enjoy art. Nick was a recipient of Aruma’s 2025 BRAVE Award for Outstanding Support. From creating opportunities that support Wendy’s wellbeing to cheering her on at every milestone, this achievement is a shared celebration for everyone involved.
Wendy’s second People’s Choice win recognises her incredible talent and the joy and connection that art brings to her life.
Congratulations, Wendy!
