SIL resident, Matthew lives with an acquired brain injury following an accident in 2010. Late last year he transferred from an Aruma home in Gunnedah to Port Macquarie. During this move his guardianship was transferred from his sister to his daughter.

Knowing Matthew’s capabilities and desire for greater independence, Matthew’s MSL, Robyn booked an assessment with his doctor to determine whether he would be able to make his own decisions.

This was the first step in giving Matthew back his independence – The Right Way.

Following the assessment, Robyn met with Matthew’s family members to discuss the options and Matthew’s request. They were very supportive of Matthew’s opportunity to regain control over his own life.

With that, Robyn submitted an application to the Guardianship Tribunal requesting that Matthew be recognised as his own decision-maker.

In early August, Matthew and his support team attended his Tribunal hearing. During the meeting, Matthew was questioned directly by the Tribunal about his living situation and the support he receives to help him make informed choices and decisions. Matthew answered proudly, praising his team and his home, he explained that he feels well supported and trusts those around him to assist when needed.

Matthew’s sister also spoke during the hearing and expressed how pleased she was with Matthew’s progress since moving to Port Macquarie. She commented on the exceptional care and support he receives and highlighted the positive impact that the team’s knowledge, experience, and understanding of Matthew have had on his quality of life.

Satisfied with what they had heard, the Tribunal announced that, effective immediately, Matthew would be responsible for making his own decisions.

At that moment, Matthew was overwhelmed with emotion. When asked if he was okay, he replied, “Yes, I’m just so happy. Thank you so much for helping me do this.”

Robyn said: “It was an incredibly moving moment and a life-changing outcome for Matthew. This decision recognises his rights, independence, and ability to direct his own future, while continuing to be supported by those who care about him. What a fantastic achievement and an even brighter future ahead for Matthew.”
