Aruma’s Stronger Together events series brought disability communities together in Newcastle, Canberra and Melbourne this October to share practical information, make connections and learn from local experts.

Newcastle kicked off the series on 14 October, welcoming people with disability, families, providers and sector experts. Housing Hub’s Karissa Janssen and Behaviour Support Practitioner Ben Coombe shared useful insights to support stronger relationships and better local coordination.

Bobby Newton, Senior Business Development Partner North, said: “Right now, it’s no secret that we’re navigating a period of challenge and change in the sector. Through the launch of this series of Community of Practice events, we’ve been blown away by the enthusiasm of like-minded people coming together to share ideas, learn from each other and grow our collective knowledge.”

“Growth and innovation often come during the most challenging times, and by sharing knowledge and supporting one another, we can navigate change and emerge stronger, together,” he said.

In Canberra, Melissa O’Hare explored practical ways to uphold human rights and reduce restrictive practices and Lauren Wheatley presented on the new NDIS Supported Independent Living (SIL) Practice Standards. Aruma participant Paul also shared a video celebrating his progress towards his photography goals—a great example of choice and meaningful goal-setting in action.

Anthony Dimo, Senior Business Development Partner, said: “Paul’s presentation at our Stronger Together event was one of the highlights of the day. His session was incredibly engaging, and it was fantastic to see the passion and talent he has for train photography and videography.”

“What stood out most was seeing how the right supports can help someone pursue what they love, build confidence and share their talents with others. Paul’s presentation was a wonderful example of putting the participant at the centre and supporting them to achieve outcomes that are meaningful to them,” he said.

The series wrapped up in Bayswater, with speakers from Aruma, Plan Partners and Inhab covering practice leadership, positive behaviour support, plan management and housing pathways. A networking afternoon tea gave everyone more time to connect and continue the conversation.

Across all three events, Stronger Together created a positive space to exchange ideas, build relationships and support better outcomes for people with disability. We look forward to continuing the series, perhaps in a city near you next year.
