Aruma has just launched three new purpose-built homes for people with a disability in Nowra on the New South Wales South Coast.
In partnership with iNSiTU Housing, the developments are classified as Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), and cater for six residents who have high support needs.
With construction now complete, Aruma proudly opened the doors for visitors at an open day in Nowra on the 21st of May. The event was also attended by Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Particia White and Fiona Philips, recently re-elected federal Labor member for Gilmore.
Martin Laverty, Aruma CEO, said: “At Aruma, we know there is immediate need for social housing in New South Wales, particularly in the coastal townships with more than 48* people with a disability in the Shoalhaven region alone looking for a suitable property that meets their needs. We’re pleased to be investing in three new homes that will provide people with a disability much needed stability and security now, and into the future.”
“We’re also proud to announce that these homes will be fitted with fire sprinklers, although not a standard requirement across NDIS builds, we will be supporting the NDIS as they push to include them as a minimum requirement. The new homes in Nowra will set a new standard for safety in Aruma’s new developments,” said Martin.
These homes will add to Aruma’s established footprint in costal New South Wales. The organisation currently supports people in the area with home and living, and community access.
After the event, Fiona Phillips said on social media, “It’s so important that we continue to support local people like Michelle, who will be one of the first residents of Aruma’s new Specialist Disability Accommodation villas in Kinghorne Street, Nowra. Michelle, 27, has been assisted by Aruma for many years and will gain a new sense of independence when she moves into her new home with her support worker by her side.”

About the homes:
These homes are located close to the centre of town with a shopping complex and medical services nearby. They have accessibility features, an onsite overnight assistance room, a sensory room, spacious open plan kitchen, dining and living spaces, air-conditioning, and outdoor living area.
The three bedrooms feature a private ensuite bathroom. There’s also a one-bedroom Villa available, just minutes from the main street. It also features open plan living and a private balcony with wide access throughout the house and a sensory room for relaxation.
