For Ryan, the hustle and bustle of the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange is more than just work. It’s where he feels most at home.
For years, he’s been loading trucks and helping behind the scenes, but now Ryan is right in the mix, comfortably calling cattle sales.
“It’s home for me,” he told ABC News.
“We’re a kind of family.”
25-year-old Ryan receives support through Aruma, with his support workers helping him pursue his passion and fully participate at the sale yard each week.
“He just seems to be getting more and more confident. It’s beautiful to see him blossom,” says support worker, Kasey Schatz.
Growing up around livestock trucks, Ryan has always had a passion for trucks and farming. He has built strong relationships with many of the cattle agents in Forbes, who love seeing him getting involved and fully support his efforts.
Ryan is a bit of a local celebrity. In 2023, his dedication was recognised when the Forbes Shire Council named him ‘Saleyard Ambassador’ in honour of his passion and commitment.
“I was very happy to receive the ambassador award in front of all the farmers, agents, truck drivers and the boss,” says Ryan.
Now promoted to cattle auctioneer, Ryan’s support workers arranged for Prime News and ABC News to cover one of his auctions, highlighting his achievements and the inclusive community that surrounds him.
Each week at the sale yard, Kasey experiences firsthand how being part of the agricultural community makes a real difference in Ryan’s life.
“Ryan is so lucky. He has such a good support network around him,” she says.
Ryan loves having the opportunity to sell cattle, but equally important is the sense of belonging. Being included in the day-to-day life of the sale yard, alongside the cattle agents, gives him confidence, pride, and a real sense of community.
Outside the sale yards, Ryan also works part-time at Rise Physio, spends time with friends, and enjoys watching a good NRL match.
With Aruma’s support and a welcoming community behind him, Ryan is doing what he loves and making a real impact in his community.
