After a long winter of Shepard avocados, it’s time to announce the moment everyone is waiting for – Hass avos are back!
Known for its dark green, bumpy skin on the outside, with a yellow-green flesh when it’s ripe, the ‘superior’ avo is back.
“We have around 7,000 avocado trees planted on Summerland Farm, some of which are over 50 years old. It’s now Hass season, which will run until early October, and that’s very exciting for us,” said Chris Smith, Service Delivery Manager at Summerland Farm.
Summerland Farm is a beautiful macadamia and avocado farm set high in the Ballina-Byron hinterland. Owned by Aruma, one of Australia’s leading disability service providers, the Farm employs more than 40 people with disability in the horticulture team.
The team packs 20,000 trays of avocados each year to be sold at major supermarket chains and can pack three trays in one minute. They expect to harvest 110 tonnes of avocados from the Farm this year.
You can purchase a box of Hass avocados directly from Summerland Farms retail hub, located at 253 Wardell Rd, Alstonville, NSW.
Other goodies, including hampers, coffee, jams, relishes and macadamia nuts, are available for purchase on the Summerland Farm website.
