Behaviour Support that helps you live your life, your way

Understanding behaviour starts here. Built around your goals.

At Aruma, Behaviour Support is never about managing behaviour. It is about understanding it.

We take the time to deeply listen, observe and build a whole picture of the person before us. Then, we co-create practical strategies with you and your team.

Our Behaviour Support team can help you learn more about why a person with a disability may engage in challenging or unsafe behaviours, and work together to find positive solutions.

We see you first. What matters in your life guides everything we do. Every session, every plan, every conversation is a partnership where we work together to understand you.

Your questions answered

Positive Behaviour Support works to understand why a person may engage in inappropriate, challenging or unsafe behaviour. It is about understanding the reasons behind behaviours and finding positive solutions together.

To help us learn more about why a person is engaging in behaviours that are concerning, we start with:

  • Gathering and reading relevant reports from health professionals, occupational therapists and other specialists
  • Listening to family members, support staff and others who know the person well, like their GP
  • Spending time and talking to the person with a disability in lots of different settings, to see how they respond and feel

What we suggest will depend on the person and their needs. There are many different strategies we can explore together.

We might look at:

  • Skills training so a person no longer feels like they need to use certain behaviours
  • Communication training
  • Changes that could be made to the home or environment
  • Ways to respond safely if the person does use a behaviour

Yes, we do. Families and carers may need education and training around how to put the recommended strategies into action. Our team will help make sure everyone understands the plan.

We can also provide training to small groups in the areas of:

  • Sexuality and relationships skills development
  • Social skills development
  • Emotional self-regulation
