Understanding behaviour, building a plan
We undertake a comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support assessment to understand behaviours of concern, including the factors that trigger and maintain them. This involves careful observation, deep listening and collaboration with the person and their support network.
Using this information, we develop an individualised Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) that outlines proactive, preventative and responsive strategies designed to reduce behaviours of concern. The plan focuses on building skills, improving quality of life, and supporting the participant, their family and support staff to implement consistent, evidence-based strategies in everyday environments.
Strategies are practical and designed for real life. This may include strengthening communication, establishing predictable routines, adjusting environments, and teaching alternative ways to express needs and emotions.

Your questions answered
A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is the first step in developing a behaviour support plan. It helps us understand the person, their unique personality and support needs, and why a behaviour might be occurring. The FBA looks at what happens before and after behaviours of concern, along with broader factors like environment, communication, routines and relationships. Direct observations across multiple settings, such as the home, school, workplace or day program, are a core part of this process.
A Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) is a written document based on the outcomes of the FBA. It includes proactive strategies that address the underlying causes of the behaviour, and response strategies that promote safety for the person and others when behaviours of concern occur. The plan is individualised and designed to be used consistently by everyone involved in the person’s support, including family, carers and support workers.
Positive behaviour support is not a quick fix, and timeframes depend on the complexity of the behaviour and support needs, consistency of implementation, environmental factors and skill-building needs. Generally, the practitioner will draft an interim BSP within four weeks, focusing on promoting safety and reducing triggers. A comprehensive BSP based on the outcomes of the assessment is typically developed within one to five months.
Our behaviour support practitioners can provide support in the home, workplace, day program, supported accommodation setting or school. Direct observations across multiple support environments are a core part of the assessment process. Telehealth appointments and consultations within an Aruma office are also an option where appropriate.
The NDIS provides funding for Therapy and Clinical Supports. The most common NDIS categories of support for Behaviour Support include Improved Daily Living, Improved Relationships and Support Coordination.
We bill in line with the NDIS Price Guide, which is updated every year.
