Speech Pathology services at Aruma

At Aruma our Speech Pathologists empower children and young people to participate fully in their daily lives by providing support around their communication skills, eating, and swallowing difficulties. We work alongside families to build on children’s strengths and support those with additional needs, developmental delays or disabilities.

Supporting functional communication skills

Every child communicates in their own way – whether through spoken words, gestures, sign language, or assistive devices. At Aruma, our Speech Pathologists create individualised, strengths-based plans to help your child engage with their world.

Our services focus on:

  • Communication: Helping your child express themselves in ways that foster relationships and reduce frustration.
  • Expanding language skills: Supporting your child to use and understand words, sentences, and follow directions to participate in daily activities.
  • Exploring new communication methods: Introducing tools like sign language or communication devices to expand options for expressing thoughts and needs.
  • Coaching supporters and communication partners: Supporting active participation in your child’s development. It focuses on equipping you with the skills, strategies, and confidence needed to support your child’s communication and feeding goals.

Improved communication can enhance confidence, reduce social isolation, and enable meaningful participation in everyday life.

How may a speech pathologist help with mealtimes?

Mealtimes are important opportunities for connection and inclusion. Aruma’s Speech Pathologists work with families to address feeding challenges, ensuring mealtimes are safe and enjoyable for your child.

Support may include:

  • Addressing challenges like coughing, gagging, or difficulty chewing.
  • Helping your child transition to different food textures.
  • Expanding your child’s food preferences for a more varied diet.
  • Supporting infant feeding, including bottle feeding and the introduction of solid foods.

Our approach is tailored to your child’s specific needs, promoting independence and positive participation in family routines.
