Your step-by-step guide for transitioning to NDIS Accommodation

Let us be your guide to navigate the ins and outs of supported accommodation.

If you’re looking for NDIS accommodation for yourself or your loved one and don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place.

Let us be your guide to navigate the ins and outs of supported accommodation.

1. Know your options

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a service ideal for people that require some help or supervision with day-to-day tasks to allow them to live independently in a small group or on their own.
  • Short-term Accommodation (STA) you can access funding for short-term or ‘respite’ accommodation to meet new friends, try new things and recharge.
  • Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is perfect if you are waiting for a confirmed long-term housing solution, for example one-off support, for stays of up to three months (90 days)

Aruma also offers a range of other home & living services such as Onsite Shared Support (OSS), Individualised Living Options (ILO) and Assistance with Daily Life (ADL) providing support within your existing home.

Don’t forget to discuss your home and living goals with your NDIS planner and seek their advice to determine the best option for the needs of you or your loved one.

2. Pick a provider

Once you’ve identified the right housing needs for your loved one, it’s time to find the provider with the right fit.

Check where they are located, the level of support they provide and the wider services they offer. Do they have a strong support program, positive feedback and values that speak to you and what you are looking for?

3. Let’s connect

Pick up the phone and give us a call to discuss your unique likes and dislikes with an Aruma local support expert. We can review a participant’s needs and NDIS funding details together to ensure everything aligns.

Once the ball is rolling on the transition, participants can access a range of support services to assist with the move, this may include coordinating support services and connecting with community resources and services.

4. Finding the right housemates

We don’t want to toot our own horn, but housemate match making is a special talent at Aruma. We have a dedicated team responsible for facilitating the onboarding journey, it’s not just about placing someone in an available room, it’s about knowing the participant and finding the right fit to allow them to flourish.

We’re committed to making sure personalities and needs are accounted for and it’s why we have so many homes with happy housemates hitting their 10, 20 and 30 year milestones together.

5. Let’s get you settled

Aruma offers a range of moving strategies to support a smooth transition. Move in gradually, or in one day, we can work flexibly to make sure our newest resident (as well as their new housemates) feel comfortable in their surroundings.

NDIS supports transition periods, including a minimum of 12 weeks at the previous plan level to support the transition to new support arrangements.

6. Stay in touch

You put a great deal of trust into the people who take over the care of your loved one, you want to know that the staff are not only capable, but accountable.

Aruma has experienced, specialist teams dedicated to making sure participants are not only safe but thriving. We have safeguards and standards in place and regularly check the training and qualifications of our staff for upskilling opportunities.

All this to say, it’s absolutely expected that loved ones will be apprehensive in the early weeks and months following a transition into NDIS accommodation. At Aruma, we provide ongoing monitoring and regular reviews of a participant’s progress and support to ensure transparency for everyone involved.
