Occupational Therapy

If your child or young person would like to build independence in everyday tasks, OTs can work together with them to learn new skills or find different ways of doing them.

Occupational Therapy at Aruma

At Aruma, our Occupational Therapists (or OTs) work in partnership with children and young people with a disability on fitness, functioning, friends, family and fun!

What goals can occupational therapy sessions work towards?

If your child or young person would like to build their independent living skills including things like:

  • Setting up morning and afternoon routines
  • Preparing a school lunch box
  • Handwriting
  • Tying shoelaces
  • Eating with a fork and knife
  • Brushing teeth
  • Play
  • Learning to swim
  • Riding a bike

Can an Occupational Therapist help make changes to my home?

If you need, our Occupational Therapists work in partnership with your child and your family and building professionals to prescribe home modifications.

This could include:

  • Ramps and rails
  • Bathroom modifications
  • Sensory room design
  • Outdoor play spaces

My child needs new assistive technology, can an Occupational Therapist assist me?

First, our Occupational Therapists (OT) will work with your child and you to find out what assistive technology your child may need.

Examples of what an OT may prescribe could include:

  • Strollers
  • Wheelchairs
  • Standers
  • Walkers
  • Seating and positioning
  • 24-hour positioning
  • Car seats
  • Sensory toys

Does Aruma offer sensory approaches?

All humans are sensory beings.  Some children and young people process sensory information such as loud noises, bright lights, textures, tastes, differently.

To develop a personalised plan, an OT will first do an assessment. From there they will work with you to create an approach to support the needs of your child.
