On March 22nd, we celebrated the launch of “I’ve Got the Power,” the first original song and music video created by the Powerful Voices team.

You can check it out here.

The song came together through the Powerful Voices singing workshops, an initiative of the Power to You program.

Allycia Staples, who is currently starring in ABC’s Better Date Than Never, said, “I hope that when other people with disability hear and sing this song, it makes them feel like they can speak up for themselves.”

The launch event was a success, with lots of singing, dancing, and pride for what the team had created.

“It was great to see such an amazing turnout at the Powerful Voices launch on Friday. We appreciate the support of everyone who celebrated with us,” said Aruma Project Lead, Tracie-Lee Little.

The workshops aim to educate people with disabilities about human rights while also giving them a creative way to express themselves. This innovative approach has been co-designed by people with disabilities.

Tracie-Lee said, “Olivia and Jasmin are two Power to You employees who helped bring this to life. They have enjoyed taking on a peer leadership role and sharing their experiences as people with disabilities. Being peer leaders has really boosted their confidence and shown other young people with disabilities what is possible.”

Power to You is funded by an Information, Linkages and Capacity Building Grant from the Australian Government, Department of Social Services and is now proudly delivered by Aruma.

“We often hear from people with a disability that there is a substantial gap in educating people with disability about their rights and how to report if their rights have been violated. The Power to You program is one step towards changing that,” said Aruma Chief Executive Officer, Martin Laverty.

There are still some places left for those interested in joining the upcoming FREE Power to You events. Check out the Power To You Humanitix for more details on how to register.
