For far too long, the sexuality and sexual expression of people with disability have been overlooked in society, and even sometimes in LGBTQIA+ Pride celebrations.

This year, at Aruma, we’re committed to changing that because true pride means making space for every voice, story, and ability.

Our teams hosted multiple pride events across Aruma, but the Club Aruma Pride event at the Nowra Community Hub was a standout celebration. Even the South Coast Register popped down to cover it – read more here

“It was a fantastic day with lots of smiles, the sharing of stories and, of course, fun! We then joined the all-staff online event, where our participant Mary Curwen and their Support Worker, Grey Niforos, shared their stories with almost 200 people online,” said Sian Alcott, Community Manager.

Grey has been with the organisation for three and a half years and praises the way we do inclusivity of all people.

“My managers and colleagues have always gone above and beyond to use my pronouns and educate themselves about the LGBTQIA+. My favourite part of working at Aurma is advocating for others and ensuring they feel safe to be themselves,” said Grey.

Grey has worked with our participant, Mary, for the past two years. They have supported Mary on their journey of self-reflection and expression.

“I go by they/them pronouns and sometimes he/him. I am still learning who I am. I am 27 years old, I’m an artist, and I like to teach people who like art and cooking. I am comfortable being they/them because it makes me feel comfortable in my body. I feel happy with who I am,” said Mary.

“Pride is important to me as it lets me know that people aren’t alone and can be unique together.”
