For Forbes local Paul, contributing to his community isn’t just part of his routine, it’s something he truly loves.

Paul volunteers two days a week at Flannery’s Pharmacy, where he’s become a much-loved member of the team.

The opportunity came about when pharmacy owner Jack Buckley reached out to Aruma looking for someone to join his team. Paul was the first person who came to mind. Having recently finished his role at Aussie Biscuits, he was ready for a new adventure.

What started as a simple volunteering opportunity has become a highlight of Paul’s week and a way for him to achieve one of his biggest NDIS goals: to be active and involved in his community.

From stacking shelves and helping oversee Flannery’s robotic medication dispenser to helping staff with customer service, Paul has taken on every responsibility with enthusiasm and pride. Jack even offered him a paid role, but because of pension rules, Paul has chosen to continue as a volunteer.

“Paul is so happy to be there and be part of the team. He often pops in to Aruma’s Community Hub to tell us what he’s been up to at the pharmacy that day,” says Amy Mongan, Aruma’s Service Lead for Community in Forbes.

The team truly value Paul’s contributions, and he’s become a familiar face in the pharmacy. That sense of belonging was on full display for Paul’s 54th birthday earlier this month.

The day began with a small party with his two housemates at their Supported Independent Living (SIL) home. His mum brought a cake, and they all celebrated together before heading out for a birthday surprise: Jack taking Paul and his support worker for a ride in his plane!

Jack, nicknamed the ‘Flying Pharmacist’, is a trained pilot who was recently named Pharmacist of the Year for his dedication to rural healthcare, including flying medical supplies during the 2022 NSW floods and delivering COVID-19 vaccinations to aged care residents in remote towns.

“It was all Paul talked about. All he wanted was to fly in Jack’s plane, and Jack made it happen,” says Amy.

“Paul loved every minute of the flight. It really made his day.”

At Aruma, we’re proud to work closely with local communities, creating meaningful opportunities for people with disability to build skills, connect, and feel truly part of their community – just like Paul at Flannery’s Pharmacy.
