Janette and Melissa are putting the fit in fitness at a local community group.

When the weekend rolls around, often the last thing we feel like doing is exercising but the ladies at our Supported Independent Living house in Glen Waverly, have been doing exactly that.

Janette and Melissa have joined a local community fitness group run by Active Monash on Saturday’s, and they have been absolutely loving it.

“The staff went above and beyond to find this program for the customers. They wanted to help the customers achieve their fitness goals, so they did a lot of researching and asking around. It was just amazing. I’m very proud of the whole team,” said Manager of Shared Living, Kat Taylor.

One of Janette’s NDIS goals has always been to engage in fitness and look after her health. The challenge has been finding an activity she liked.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare tells us that while 52% of Australians without disability report having insufficient physical activity, this number jumps to 72% for people with disability. That’s where inclusive, affordable and sustainable fitness options like Active Monash come in.

When the staff came across the group fitness classes at the Monash Aquatic & Recreation Centre, they sought Janette’s feedback to see if it was something she would be interested in. She was excited to give it a go, and got long term housemate and friend, Melissa to come along with her.

“Both the ladies have really loved the sessions. Throughout the week they look forward to attending the class and have shared that they feel very refreshed after it. They also enjoy that it’s not a class for people with disability. People from all over the community attend which is great,” continued Kat.

If you or a loved one is interested, the Active Abilities class is hosted on Saturdays and makes fitness easy in a thriving, vibrant, exciting, and community-driven environment. There is an extensive timetable with a variety of class options so there is bound to be something suitable for everyone. They also offer 40% off all standard fees for Health Care Card holders! Meaning concession prices for some classes are as low as $8.20, or $73.20 for a 10 pass!

When they’re not working out, the friends of 20 years also enjoy nourishing their social and mental wellbeing. They often go out to concerts and most recently went to the circus.

“They are such good friends. I’ve never seen housemates with such a good relationship. Sadly, we recently lost a resident, but their friendship and the dedication of the staff has really kept them in good spirits,” said Kat.

There are currently two vacancies available at this home. Janette and Melissa are looking forward to welcoming a new housemate, and you can find out more about the home here.
