Find out how these residents are doing their bit to cut down on plastic waste.
With 130,000 tonnes of plastic waste dumped in Aussie waterways every year, residents at Tenterden Aruma Supported Independent Living home in Botany, New South Wales, are doing their bit to reduce this alarming environmental impact.
The five housemates have been collecting single-use plastic bottles for a few months and, once they had three bags’ full (yes sir, yes sir 😉), off they went to the local recycling plant to ensure they were put to good use.
While they’re saving the planet, our participants also managed to make more than $15 from their efforts to deposit the bottles – what a clever way to make a bit of pocket money!
Check out a video of participants having tonnes of fun putting all the bottles into the collection machine:
Support worker Sushant said the housemates showed interest in the environment, so the team have been supporting them to do activities like gardening and collecting the bottles for recycling.
We’ve been collecting the bottles for a long time said Sushant.
We’ve been collecting the bottles for a long time
We encourage participants to save plastic bottles and made it a nice outing to go and recycle them at the plant.
As part of our new strategic plan, Aruma has environmental targets that aim for zero carbon emissions by 2034. The housemates will continue saving their bottles for regular visits to the recycling plant, which supports our ambitious goal!
