Craig celebrates a 25-year career with Aruma

For Charlestown local, Craig Johnstone, his role as a Supported Employee at Aruma is more than just a job. As he celebrates his 25^th year at the social enterprise, he looks back at how he has gained friendships, independence and self-confidence all while building a career to be proud of.

“The thing I love most about my job is working with my fellow workmates and all the wonderful friends I have made over the last 25 years. I’m very proud of myself for this achievement,” shared Craig.

Aruma is one of Australia’s largest not-for-profit NDIS disability service providers, currently supporting close to 4,000 adults and children with disabilities. Their social enterprises across Newcastle, employ more than 200 people with a disability as Supported Employees and give people like Craig, the opportunity to thrive at work with support by their side.

“Craig is such a hard worker and team player. If I ever had a tight deadline, I’d give the job to Craig as he would never let me down. He could create 200 pegs a day and knew how to use every machine in the factory,” said the previous Production Supervisor at the Woodwork site, Darren Slusarek.

Craig joined Aruma back in 1999. He quickly became known as the “always smiling quiet achiever” who learnt to operate over 12 machines and tools. After 23 successful years at Woodwork, he decided it was time for a new challenge and moved to the Metalwork Manufacturing site in Warabrook in 2022.

“I know the team felt sad to lose Craig but we’re proud of him for taking on a new challenge at the Metalwork site. It has also created an opportunity for some of the local youngsters to join our team and give it a go,” said Darren.
