Our resident green thumb Andrew from Springfield, makes his on-screen debut.
Andrew from our Springfield Supported Independent Living (SIL) home is a man of many talents. He recently tried on the hat of a real estate agent when he worked with the marketing team to film a vacancy video at the house.
You can see his debut on our YouTube channel and Facebook page.
“Andrew thought it was great, and he is excited about getting more housemates. It was a really good experience for his self-esteem,” shared Support Worker, Jane Thompson Mcleod.
After seeing his video, Andrew told Jane that he felt “very proud to be representing Aruma.”
Throughout the clip, Andrew showcases his favourite parts of the house, including the humble veggie garden he is extremely proud of. Zucchini, sweet corn, spinach, and beetroot… you name it, and our “farmer” Andrew, can grow it.
“He had thought about fixing the garden beds for a while but wanted us to help him begin the journey. After the initial support, Andrew has really taken the lead on it. He always says he is like a farmer,” said Jane.
She continued, “every day, he goes out and tends to the veggie patch. It’s great for his mental health and gives him a sense of purpose.”
Trips to the local fruit market have become a routine outing for Jane and Andrew, where they take home the leftover scraps for composting. You could say it’s the soil of the century.
He has been preparing the second garden bed to grow herbs and edible flowers. Our resident green thumb is also very technologically savvy and resourceful, constantly researching new methods and techniques.
“It has been a real journey with Andrew. He has been with Aruma for two years and has achieved a lot. The next goal we are tackling is his health and well-being,” said Jane.
Andrew looks forward to working with a health and wellness coach while biking more, walking the coast and making healthy food choices. Having an awesome range of homegrown veggies to choose from definitely helps!
He can’t wait to share his achievements with new housemates and have some new faces to challenge at Monopoly.
