A home away from home for young people
Fun, friends and new adventures
Respite care for young people (also called Short Term Respite or STR) is a short stay away from home for your child aged 16+ with disability. It gives them the chance to try new things, make friends and grow their independence. It also gives you and your family a well-earned break from your caring role.
Your child can stay in one of our welcoming respite homes, or we can support them in your own home while you take a break.
At Aruma, we believe every young person has unique dreams and potential. Our team supports your child every step of the way by creating a safe space where they feel heard, connected and cared for.
Where is respite available?
At Aruma, we have respite homes for young people across NSW and VIC. Each home is safe, welcoming and set up for teenagers 16+ with a disability.

This might include:
- Going to the movies or out for lunch
- Visiting the beach or local attractions
- Playing their favourite sport
- Joining in with cooking or arts and crafts
- Just hanging out and having fun with other kids
No matter their age or interests, there’s something for them.
Your child’s NDIS plan funds up to 28 days of Short Term Respite each year, with a maximum of 14 days at a time. How you use this time is up to you.

Learn about STR for adults.
NDIS support categories: Children’s respite is funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life in your child’s NDIS plan.
STR might be stated in your plan, but even if it isn’t, you may still be able to use your Core funding for respite, as long as it fits within your budget and won’t affect your other approved supports.
The NDIA looks at a few things when deciding whether to fund children’s respite. This includes the level of support your child needs each day, whether you need help to keep going in your caring role, and whether other support options have been considered.
In some cases, such as when there’s a risk of your child entering out-of-home care due to their disability-related support needs, the NDIS may fund up to 60 days of respite per year.
If your child needs longer term care, other options like out-of-home care may be available.
Please note: We bill in line with the NDIS Price Guide, which generally increases annually.
