At Aruma, we understand that the right support is key to ensuring people with disability can lead fulfilling and active lives.

This year’s World Down Syndrome Day theme is “Improve our support systems.”

Aruma participant, Fiona is a 74-year-old artist with Down syndrome who exemplifies the spirit of this year’s theme and shows what is possible with the right support.

Fiona is a talented artist who has worked with Arts Project Australia since 1991 and has shown her artwork in galleries around the world. A couple of years ago, she even collaborated with iconic Aussie fashion label, Gorman, designing their vibrant textile prints.

Recently, Fiona was invited to a morning tea at Government House, where she joined the Governor of Victoria to celebrate local artists.

Fiona has been the star of many other events, including a celebratory BBQ hosted by Arts Project Australia at the end of last year. At this special celebration, Fiona’s contribution to the arts was honoured, and the event was aptly named the “Fiona Longhurst BBQ”.

Fiona has certainly made a big impact on her support team at Aruma and her housemates in her supported accommodation.

“Fiona flourishes in all that she does because she has a zest for life and strength to keep active,” says Jan Sharman, House Supervisor.

Another key to Fiona’s success is her ability to speak up and advocate for herself, making sure her voice and needs are always central to the support she receives.

“Fiona tells her support workers what supports she needs to keep active and will not hold back if someone doesn’t provide the supports the way she likes.”

Fiona has recently faced some health challenges that have impacted her independence. However, Fiona and her support team at Aruma continue to find ways to adapt. Through flexible and personalised support, Fiona has been able to continue doing what she loves most – accessing her community and creating beautiful works of art.

Fiona’s story is a powerful example of how the right support can empower people with disability to speak up, make decisions, and have autonomy.

From having a say in everyday personal choices to being involved in writing laws and policies, people with disability demand a seat at the table where decisions are made.

As the saying goes, “Nothing about us without us!”
