We want to help break down barriers to the NDIS, so let’s talk about everything you need to know about applying for the NDIS.
We know that applying to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can seem overwhelming, especially when you’re first looking into it.
At Aruma, we want to help break down barriers to the NDIS, so let’s talk about everything you need to know about applying for the NDIS.
First, check out our NDIS Quick Overview for a refresher on what the NDIS is, how it works and what it does.
Now, when it comes to applying, we’ve broken it down into three steps:
Step One – Eligibility
An important first step, is determining if you or the person you care for, is eligible for the NDIS.
The NDIS website has an Eligibility Checklist, which is a good place to start. The main requirements are around:
If your child is under nine years old, learn more about the ‘early childhood approach.’
Step Two – Make an Access Request
The first step of the application process is making an ‘Access Request.’ The Access Request is a form that will ask you to answer questions about the topics above and provide your details.
There are multiple ways to submit the Access Request, including via computer, via mail or over the phone. You can learn more about the Access Request here.
Step Three – Gather supporting evidence
Once your Access Request has been received, it’s likely that the NDIA will ask you to provide additional information. They will ask questions about the disability and how it impacts daily life.
They will want to see ‘supporting evidence’ of disability. This can include letters, assessments or other reports from a health or education professional. This documentation will help the NDIA to decide on NDIS eligibility.
What happens next?
When the NDIA has made a decision about your Access Request, you will be notified in writing.
If you are approved, you can start enquiring about services. If you are not approved, there are still ways you can access supports and services in your community. You can read more about what to do if you are not approved here.
